On paper, one of the top four in Sheffield & Hallam County League Division One will surely win the League’s Krukowski Cup competition. The second round draw paired last season’s beaten finalists Sheffield Wednesday at home to fellow top four side Sheffield United Community reserves.

United were 3-0 up, eventually winning 3-2 when the sides met in the League back in September, but this time Wednesday prevailed and arguably should have won by more than a 1-0 margin which puts them into the last 8 along with their main rivals, current leaders Handsworth and Dearne & District both of whom enjoyed comfortable home victories.

With Graham Solley Sports Centre, Wednesday’s regular home, undergoing a facelift, Wednesday are playing their home games at Shardlows (home of Ecclesfield Red Rose) this season.

Conditions were sunny, but bitterly cold, chiefly due to a very strong wind blowing the length of the pitch.

United’s Laura Parsons was the busier of the two keepers in the first half, saving from Annalise Carroll and Jodie Ealand before United created their best opening of the half. Bethan Ward’s clearance found Abbi Creed whose shot went agonisingly inches wide.

Ealand’s lofted shot hit the underside of the bar on 28 minutes, while Lucy Davenport was also denied by the woodwork as Wednesday sought to make having the backing of the wind count and just before the half time whistle Emily Higgins lifted her shot over Parsons, but also over the bar from an excellent opening.

Creed almost put United ahead just past the hour, but her shot was parried by Emily Higgins with Katie Waymouth clearing off the line. Carroll scored the tie’s only goal midway through the second half. Higgins had a rasping rising strike turned over by Parsons. Creed shot just off target from the edge of the area on 85 minutes when perhaps she could have advanced a few more yards before shooting.
