Result : United 2 Dearne 1 ( game played at Dearne )
It was 3rd place Dearne versus 4th place United ,three points behind, on Tuesday evening. Dearne had twice beaten United already at home and after the fixture had been reversed United again travelled north on what was a very pleasant evening for football.
With the U18s playing a crucial game the following evening United Manager Joe Wykes was delighted to still have a strong squad without risking any of the younger players dual signed. United`s problem though was that come the kick-off , and the Referee was punctual to the half six start irrespective, United had only 8 players able to start. The rush hour traffic had delayed 3 players after leaving work and had just arrived as the game kicked off. The 8 took the start and as we often suspect that players take little notice of what they`re told , such as in this case , `keep it tight and wait for the reinforcements to arrive` United promptly won the ball, attacked and Amber Wilson put United ahead after just 47 seconds ! Quite remarkable .
The 8 were soon 11 for United and a stunned Dearne were soon attacking to repair the damage. The gifted Nic Jepson indeed finding an equaliser around the 5 minute mark. Dearne in fact had 3 former United Reserve players in their side . Keeper Georgia Ward , former skipper Jorden Spurr and forward Rebecca Labella. There would be no room for sentiment though as both sides would slog out a hard battle until the final whistle. It was United who scored what eventually proved to be the winner after 23 minutes through right-winger Paris Wagstaff.
Dearne had the greater clear scoring chances during the game. Jepson often having to shoot from further out due to the solid defending of the United back line. Those efforts from Dearne on target not blocked were collected by Keeper Laura Parsons who had a very reliable game. The entire team worked extremely hard to preserve the lead even with 3 regular defenders absent in Hopkinson , Ward and Yaz Wilson. Alex Weston and Colette Shelton , playing on injured , having both dropped back from their usual midfield roles. Sub Kelly Pearson , usually a striker was back tackling in a game that saw her extend her team appearance record to 63 games , now some 23 more than the next player , the afore-mentioned , Jorden Spurr.
The win still kept United 4th but now on goal difference to Dearne though United have a game in hand. Next up is a home clash with 2nd place Sheffield Wednesday , this sunday at Westfield.
