1sts in bizarre 5 -5 thriller (Senior 1st Team)

Sunday 12th May 2013 (1406 Views)
scoreline : United 5 Liverpool Feds 5
Surely the most bonkers game of United`s season , that left both managers drained and non of the players involved particularly happy with the outcome.
The two teams had met the previous sunday in Liverpool and United had won 1-0 with a header from sub Heather Craddock after 63 minutes having just come on. United had several regulars unavailable for that trip and called up 6 players from the Under 18s including a first league start for midfielder Chloe Dixon. With the defence looking very inexperienced compared to normal , Deryn Ahmed was marshalling 3 of her players from the U18s to defend a high line tactic. The offside traps helping United to the win.
For the home game Manager Steve Ahmed had the experienced Naylor , Lewis and Skull back but elected to keep the same back four that had helped keep a clean sheet the week before. We had the first offside flag up with 20 seconds of kick-off so few watching expected the goalfest that would follow.
Liverpool took the lead after 14 minutes with a shot into the roof of the net. That was equalised 8 minutes later when Ahmed flighted a free-kick very accurately over the Keeper from some distance. Both teams were playing with high offside lines but the visitors were the better at beating them. Three times a striker was put through and United Keeper Kirsty Johnson had to race out as `sweeper-keeper`to try and clear. The first her clearance was charged down and the striker went on but elected for a tame header that covering defender Jess Walker cleared. The second the striker just beat Johnson to the ball went past but placed her shot wide. The third Johnson cleared but was injured in so doing. United were living dangerously and Liverpool deserved their second goal , which came down United`s left in the last minute of the half. United had barely tested the Keeper but Tania Marsden netted an equaliser with the very last kick of the half.
The second half was a breathless , end to end and hard fought half that became more bizarre as it wore on as the goals flooded in. United conceded 2 more within 5 minutes of the restart and it became clear Johnson couldnt continue. With no sub Keeper available defender Christine Skull accepted responsibility to come off the bench to take her place. Marsden scored her second on 51 minutes and completed her hat-trick 10 minutes later , both from close range as United pulled the game back round to 4-4 . With Lewis and Naylor on United looked the most likely now to go on. Naylor hit a shot towards to top corner that the Liverpool tipped onto the bar ,the best save ive seen this season.
Then on 75 United went ahead for the first time in the game, Ami Buzzeo hitting a sweet left-footed half volley over the keeper from outside the box for 5-4. Both Managers were urging their sides forward and every player was digging deep to try to effect the outcome. Liverpool found an equalier on 81 minutes for 5-5 and really it would have been hard on either side to have lost after scoring so many.
Marsden was in disbelief not to have won after scoring 3, another player likened the game to that of a 6-a-side training match with so many goals going in. It was certainly entertaining stuff to watch even if the result didnt really suit either side.
The point takes United back 4th just ahead of Middlesbrough and Liverpool Feds move 1 place away from the drop on goal difference.
Team : away match the previous week : JOHNSON : AHMED , WARD , WALKER , HOPKINSON : DIXON , RUDDACH , MUDGE , KUTCHA : BURKE , BUZZEO . Subs : CRADDOCK ( for Kutcha ), SANTORO ( for Burke ).
