A bright start from United was typified by some slick footwork from Tilly releasing Olivia, she was eventually closed down by an alert Dronfield defence, the resulting long throw from Beth caused problems for their defenders but was cleared before Sam could get her shot away.
At the other end, an attack from the right wing caused problems for Grace who dived to save a shot, the rebound spun into the air and was headed into the net by the centre forward, only to be ruled out for offside. Many of Dronfield’s attacks were started on their left wing, as she was frequently being played onside by the United defence, the score was kept level on several occasions by a quick thinking Grace who acted like a sweeper and cleared the ball up field to start many attacks.
Aveanne linked well with Tilly on United’s left, and between them set up 2 chances for Olivia who drifted in from her right wing position, but both her attempts were foiled by an alert Dronfield goalkeeper. Paige and Laura at the heart of the United defence, both defended well, and assisted by Elsa and Becca playing as fullbacks, kept the home teams attempts on goal to a minimum. United started to get a foothold in this game, and Aveanne on the left fed Rachel, her pass found Sam on the 18 yard line, and her stunning shot flew over the goalkeeper to give the Reds a 1:0 lead.
Dronfield mounted several attacks in the next 10 minutes to try and bring the scores level, but these were cut out by Becca who was up to the challenge. Some slack defending let their striker bear down on Grace’s goal, and although Grace got her arm to the shot, the ball trickled over the line to make the score level at 1:1. Then followed 2 quick goals for the Dronfield team just prior to half time, the last of which was a wonderful strike from a headed clearance from Laura, the forward collected the ball on the edge of the area and her shot flew past Grace into the top corner of her net, to make it 3:1 at half-time.
As the second half started, Tilly again had a shot saved, and at the other end Grace dived to save very spectacularly. United started to pass the ball well, and a move involving Ellie, Rachel, Sam, and Aveanne, put Rachel in the clear but her shot went just past the post. Cari came on to slot in at right back, and her speed helped to make several clearances. Midway through the second period Dronfield increased their lead from another 18 yard shot, and a few minutes after their winger chipped Grace from a tight angle to make it 5:1.
Sam was fouled and the resulting free kick was put wide by Paige. Selina’s tough tackling in the centre of midfield, gave another chance for Rachel but the goalkeeper was equal to her effort. A last ditch attempt for the home side made it 6:1 at the final whistle.
As bad as the final score looks, on another day the United team may have given the Dronfield girls a run for their money.
