Early Barnsley attacks, were kept at bay by an alert Paige and Laura in the heart of Unitedís defence, with a customary slide tackle from Paige preventing an early shot from a lively Barnsley forward, and the post coming to the defenceís aid to prevent an early goal from a right wing cross. Another attack from the Barnsley right resulted in the ball going over the crossbar. After 6 minutes the Blues forced a corner, and from the resulting kick a near post header gave the Barnsley girls a 1:0 lead.
United couldnít get out of their own half as another shot went past the United goalpost, and it was no surprise when the Barnsley girls extended their lead from a free kick in to the top corner of the United net. Some more sloppy defending, handed another goal to Barnsley, who were building a commanding lead. The Reds now started to put together some passing moves, with Olivia playing a good ball through to Sam, her shot was well saved by the goalkeeper. United now seemed to have stopped the original onslaught, and as the first half came to an end started to re-build their confidence, with several efforts being wide of the target.
As the second half got underway, Rachel in the United goal made 2 excellent stops, but was unable to prevent a fourth goal as the onrushing forward latched onto a ball played over the top of the defence to lob the ball over the keeper as she tried to close the attacker down. A pass from Katie put Selina in a good position, but her shot was also well saved. At the other end Becca defended stoutly as the Barnsley girls again went on the attack, Laura was her very committed self and on many occasions, stopped more Barnsley attacks.
More attacks from Unitedís right saw Ellie put in a great shot which the goalie was equal to, and another through ball from Katie, now playing centre midfield, set Sam on her way, however she was well tackled by a tough Barnsley defence. As the game entered the final stages , a ball played through the United defence saw the forward evade a tackle from Paige to run through and make it 5:0, and a further attack saw another goal to the Barnsley Blues, From a throw in on the right by Ellie, Katie headed the ball on to Olivia whose looping shot beat the goalie to make the score 6:1.
Unitedís team rallied towards the end with Becca having a shot saved, Olivia found Sam in space again but another shot was gathered .
